Reflections . . . should cause one to take his present personality . . . as but one of the various personalities which his individuality was equally capable of generating had it happened to enter phenomenal history through birth in a different environment.  And the fact might further be that, perhaps as a result of persistent striving to acquire a skill or trait for which he now has little gift, aptitude for it in future births would be generated and incorporated into his individuality.

By the term "soul" we mean that individualized aspect of the Self, including . . . the Intuitive Self --and Higher Mind, all of which are regarded as normal.

The first is body dependent . . . it is known as the "Lower Self.". . . The "Higher Self" is identical and continuing in and through different lives.  It is the permanent element which runs like a thread through the different existences [personalities] which are strung like beads along its length.

"The rational, but earthly Physical Intellect of man" is "incased in and bound by matter."  The Higher Mind is "that which reincarnates periodically . . . while its reflected "Double," changing with every new incarnation and personality, is, therefore, conscious but for a life-period." The personal consciousness had originally been infused into the quaternary at birth, as a projection from its parent, the Higher Self, and can only be lost if it utterly misuses its life on earth, and has no spiritual harvest to return to the Parent for assimilation into the higher consciousness during the long heavenly afterdeath condition.

Physical existence  is one way in which the soul chooses to experience its own actuality.
